Wrong Place & Time for a Florida Scooter Driver
Tampa Bay, Florida – Michelle Wells, a resident of Tampa, was struck while riding her scooter last week on Friday night. The family of this Tampa woman, who police said was hit and killed by a drunk driver, is remembering her.
Authorities said Wells was going south along North Nebraska Avenue, near East 112th Avenue when the driver of a van hit her from behind. Wells was thrown off her scooter and hit by the van. Police say the driver, identified as James Brennan, left the scene and parked the van in a lot at 109th Avenue – where he then took off. He was arrested shortly after.
According to Wells’ family, the woman rode her scooter everywhere and always had on her helmet and a reflective vest. However, all her gear wasn’t enough to protect her from a drunk driver, Tampa Police said in a statement.
Wells’ family is angry at the alleged circumstances surrounding her death.
“He shouldn’t have did it. He should’ve just stayed there and waited and see if she was alright,” said Wells’ mother, Hazel Clark.
“Devastated and shocked. It still seems unreal,” said Wells’ sister, Tiara Clark.
“She was just a loving person. Helpful, giving. Always willing to lend a hand every time. Anything Michelle can do, she was there to help,” said Clark ruefully.
Brennan has been charged with DUI Manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and driving with a Suspended License.
